You're So Vain
Writing a blog is an exercise in narcissism. The motivating factor for anyone writing a blog is, someone wants to read what I have to say. This by itself is not an unworthy sentiment, particularly when what one has to say is worth reading. But, and forgive me in advance should this come off as snobbish or elitist (both of which I've been accused of, despite my proclivity to buy Internet coupons several times a day), much of the content out there is pretty lame. Maybe I'm thinking more of Facebook posts which chronicle the slings and arrows of not-so-outrageous fortune that constantly assault us every day. Perhaps it's more of a Twitter thing, where 140-character missives updated every three minutes allows us to be voyeurs into the petty components comprising the lives of F-list celebs. One of the usual defenses of our Brave New Electronic World is that it allows everyone to be a producer or content provider, as if it's a good thing for all 7,000,000,000 of us to be wired to one another and comment on the mundane goings-on in Los Angeles or Toronto or Bucharest. My worry: what's not getting done while all this content-producing is happening?
